Advising

Here is a typical ‘path’ through the PACE requirements:

  1. LET US KNOW that you are interested in the program as soon as possible, so that you can be on our distribution list and have access to the information you need.
  2. Apply to the program after you have taken, or are in the process of taking, at least one core course and one other course/elective that counts. The latest you would apply would be spring of your sophomore year. [We will consider exceptions to this on an individual basis, but in general you will need to have completed a few of the courses in your first two years.]
  3. Core courses + two electives would be completed in the first two years. Electives would be chosen to explore majors and minors or because the topic is particularly interesting to you. You may complete up to the four electives as soon as you wish.
  4. Issues Forum: The Issues Forum is an all-day Saturday experience which usually is scheduled for February. Any student on campus may participate in the Forum. It is especially helpful for students who are enrolled in PACE-C 211 Making Public Decisions during the same semester. Students may register for PACE-C 400 for 1 credit and complete the preliminary assignment (usually a reading and written reflection), participate at the Forum, and write a position paper and post-Forum reflection. Students may also choose to have the leadership experience of participating with members of the PACE Student Advisory Board to plan and facilitate the Issues Forum. Contact pace@indiana.edu for more information.
  5. Internship: In your sophomore year, begin consulting with the field director about your interests to explore possible resources and how you can take the initiative to structure an internship that suits your interests. You can plan on doing the internship anytime after you have completed the core courses and at least two PACE electives and been accepted into the PACE certificate program. [SWK, SPEA, and INFO students have special considerations here.] You can plan a summer or semester experience and we will assist you in earning credit and provide supportive mentoring and academic supervision.
  6. Capstone seminar: You will need to have completed all the other requirements above (except perhaps the 2nd deliberation retreat) before enrolling in the capstone seminar. [SWK and INFO again will have separate considerations.] This is a senior year course that will ask you to integrate all your previous experiences in the program as you compile some research or policy recommendations.
