PACE-C 210* (3 cr.) Public Leadership in America [sub = LESA-L 105 fall 09] This course provides an interdisciplinary understanding of the role of leadership and individual action in American political and civic life from local communities to the nation’s capital. Students will compare and analyze different leadership styles and individuals as well as reflect on their own leadership strengths and qualities.
PACE-C 211* (3 cr.) Public Decision Making in America This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the decision making roles of the basic institutions of American public life, including local, state, and federal government, non-profit organizations, political parties, the courses, and the media. Students will also assess the decision making role of particular political and civic organizations such as political parties, faith-based organizations, neighborhood groups, advocacy organizations, and administrative agencies.

Experiential Exercise in collective decision-making (1 credit)
PACE-C 400* (1 cr. graded A-F) Issues Forum Students accepted into the PACE program who have completed both core courses will participate in a structured activity to develop a solution to a particular problem. Preparation work in the fall and a one-day weekend retreat in early spring, along with analysis and reflection, will be involved.
Internship Experience (3 credits) PR: completion of core courses and two electives.
PACE-C 410* (3 cr., S/F) Internship PACE staff can help with placement. Students will choose an experience in political and civic action and/or policy-making, in a public agency, governmental branch, or non-governmental organization. A PACE academic mentor will supervise the student, partnering with the internship site supervisor, resulting in academic and professional development measured by program guidelines built into e-portfolio or a similar tool.
Capstone Seminar (3 credits)
PACE-C 450* (3 cr.) Capstone seminar [PR: completion of core courses, electives, and internship]
This course is designed to draw together the students’ academic study, experiential learning, and co-curricular activities. Students will analyze and integrate their political and civic engagement and development. The primary task will be to produce a project that demonstrates and documents their understanding of American political and civic life and their individual learning—for example, a specific policy proposal or issue briefing or digital presentation that brings together their research and experiential work in all the components of the program.
