This summer I worked as an intern with the Indiana State Department of Health. Specifically I was with the public health department and more specifically, the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. Throughout the summer I did a lot of research into benefits of physical activity and education as well as compiled and created resources that will be available to anyone for free. These resources will help educate people on how to live healthy lifestyles.
In addition, I did work developing resources for educators on best practices on how to include students with disabilities (mental, physical, and behavioral). What I was most excited about was the food evaluation chart I created. I realized there was not one single resource for people to breakdown their nutritional choices and determine how they are doing in regards to their food choices. It is a chart that is broken down into about fourteen nutritional behaviors and by days of the week. It is printable and an additional resource that has links and ideas on how to consistently carryout each of the behaviors is included.
I feel as though my work has the potential to truly improve others' lives and that I was able to partially bridge the health gap between socioeconomic classes in Indiana by creating free and accessible resources for all people.
