Student Spotlight: Zach Fischer

Tuesday, August 27, 2019

This past summer I had the privilege of serving as an intern for the Strike Team within the Marion County Prosecutors Office in Indianapolis, Indiana. I was the only non-law student intern for the Strike Team, which specializes in prosecuting cases involving drugs, guns, and gangs.

Along with learning about criminal activity within Indianapolis, I also gained experience through a wide variety of tasks. I was asked to monitor jail calls placed by defendants from our cases in order to gain evidence the prosecutors could use in cases and trials. I attended countless criminal trials in court ranging from possession of narcotics to murders. I sat at the prosecution table for a hearing on a defendant I had to locate solely off of his name. I filed motions and orders through the courts' official records system. I communicated with witnesses and defense counsels regarding the status of trials and hearings. I formulated a plea agreement that was accepted by a defendant. I compiled drug offense statistics in Marion County from 2016-2018. I rode along with an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer during his shift.

And last but not least, I gained valuable experience that has reinforced my decision to pursue a career in the legal field. I couldn't have asked for a better experience this past summer and can not thank my co-workers and the Marion County Prosecutors Office enough. Finally, I would not have been able to do it without the support and assistance I received from the PACE program and thank them immensely for the ability to pursue a dream internship!
